Digitalisation as the basis for more efficient maintenance

Siempelkamp Group is oriented internationally as a technology supplier for industrial machinery construction, casting and nuclear technology. Siempelkamp supports their customers in numerous ways as a supplier of integrated production lines and systems for the processing of wood and wood products, metals, composites and plastics alike. They employ about 2,800 employees around the globe.

In early 2022, Siempelkamp introduced Scable's maintenance software, to better structure and digitise processes in their construction plants.

Ease of use and quick training are key for maintenance software

The decision to go with Scable software was based not only on the exceptional user friendliness of the software, but also on the promise of rapid deployment. This succeeded, as the software was rolled out for productive use within weeks, in July of 2022.

Among the reasons for the quick start was the step-by-step roll-out of individual software modules. The company started out with the base module - reactive and preventive maintenance. This already contains a reporting system, task delegation, maintenance schedules and documentation.

Reduction of Mean Time To Repair by 46%

The effiency improvements were readily noticeable. "We we are able to reduce our unplanned downtime by 39% within just a year", remarks Dennis Haefs, manager of maintenance operations at the firm. The Mean Time To Repair, the average time between the onset of a fault and the resumption of operations, was lowered by 46%.

Thanks to the use of modern software and the notable efficiency gains, the maintenance team at Siempelkamp had a positive impact on the image of maintenance within the firm. Foreman Haefs ensured the early involvement of employees within the project, to achieve maximum transparency and quick acceptance.

Improvements in Health & Safety thanks to digital checklists

Health & Safety is a priority at Siempelkamp, since a lot of maintenance work has to be undertaken in danger areas. With the introducton of risk analyses and accompanying checklists, improvements could be achieved here, too. "The last-minute-risk-analysis checklists allow us to kill two birds with one stone. We foster greater awareness for work safety among our workers and fulfill our documentation duties at the same time", notes Benjaming Grünauer, the managing director at Siempelkamp.

In addition to the improvements already achieved, Siempelkamp is already working on further optimizations of maintenance processes. Currently, additional modules of the Scable software with regard to team planning are being rolled. Dennis Winnebald, acting manager of maintenance, hopes to see further improvements still in his department, remarking "the improvement of our maintenance processes and availability is a continuous task".
